Dominican's Favorite Dish
In Washington Heights, the little Dominican Republic, people's favorite dish is mangú con los tres golpes. This dish comes from the Dominican Republic and is popularized in Washington Heights since there is a lot of Dominicans living there. The recipe for this dish includes the following ingredients green plantains, Fry Cheese, Salami induveca, eggs, and red onion. I can remember waking up every morning to my mom frying onions to cook this dish because my eyes would get watery. I could see the plátanos boiling while hearing the sizzling sound of salami, cheese, and eggs being fried in the pan. I remember sneaking a roll of salami while my mom was not looking, so I can prepare before the meal.
My aim was to give the audience an image of my childhood by using the 5 senses. Using the 5 senses will give the audience the imagery and the feel of my culture. Instead of telling you how it's being made, I wanted you to have the thoughts that I went through. This story is described as "a fun and tasteful time to be alive". It's fun sneaking up trying not to get caught by your mom and enjoying life as a kid. It was tasteful because it was fresh out of the super hot oily pan and when things are hot freshly made, they tend to be super tasteful. One of the ideas I wanted to leave the audience with was to cook this dish and have the same feeling when trying it out. By doing this, it will create strong and long-term connections with other people around. I aimed to embrace the importance of building and spreading culture, especially Dominican culture. The idea of spreading Dominican culture is important because they aren't many Dominicans around the U.S. are mostly located on the east coast of the United States. To communicate my ideas effectively, social media has helped me because people around the world use social media to post their different varieties of foods. Social Media helps people who struggle with imagery, a better sense of the food. This should inspire the audience/readers to try out the dish and keep spreading the great foods of the Dominican Culture.
